Open letter to my atheist friends

Spread the love
Open letter to my atheist friends:

You may have seen this photo of mine last fall. I love the image of three crosses, a construction arrow, and the reflection / smudge / or something else in the car window.

It had millions of views, thousands of shares and comments, and I still haven’t responded to all the messages in my inbox.

Most of these reactions, whether public or sent to me privately, were kind and constructive.
Others? Not so much.

The majority of these opposing comments and messages were from passionate atheists disagreeing and debating the existence of God and any sort of life before or after this one.

Some sent memes, used foul language, and mocked comments by other believers.

I truly appreciate differing opinions. Whether it’s faith, politics, or even more divisive topics like Travis and Taylor, alternate points of view can draw us closer.

In fact, my own family has conflicting views on all three of those hot-button subjects.

Even in religious discourse, I believe that honest, well-meaning differences of opinion can strengthen us and foster respect.

I used to write a weekly column for a number of platforms and I knew that any piece even remotely touching on faith would trigger heated, often vitriolic debate. One site had to turn off comments on my columns because it became so negative and contentious.

May I sincerely ask why?

Those who choose to believe in God use faith to live a better life. Not better than yours, just better for us.
Many of us believe that faith in God enables us to better serve others. Not better than you, just better for us.

Do people like me believe that an atheist can’t serve the community as effectively? Of course not. I know plenty of people who don’t believe in God, but who believe deeply in goodness.

Just because believers might rely on our faith to fuel feelings of love and empathy doesn’t mean we have an exclusive market on benevolence.

Kindness is kindness, regardless of the motives.

Are you generous? Compassionate? Inclusive?

Wonderful! Believers strive for the same.

Are you understanding? Gracious? Respectful?

Terrific! We’re working on the same traits.

Obviously I can’t speak for all my friends and readers who believe, but please know how much I honor your choices.

I will never apologize for choosing to believe in God. But I am certainly sorry if you’ve felt judged, minimized, or cast aside for choosing differently.

I do not think you’re less interesting or valuable because you don’t share my beliefs. Perhaps I can do better at demonstrating that.

Please know I’ll always defend your right to choose your own peaceful path, and I will not be offended by your journey. I only ask that you’re not offended by mine.

Maybe my most cherished belief is that when we stand together with no agenda, no hatred, and no ulterior motives, we can solve real problems.

Just imagine if we were all linked by love, trust, and a desire for a better world. We could do anything!

Let’s try.

Your friend,

Jason
